Gone are the days when Annapurna Circuit and Manaslu Circuit treks are considered the ultimate circuit treks in Nepal. Now, the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek has taken this position with its untouched trails, bare minimum teahouses, isolation, and raw trekking experience.

The Annapurna Circuit and Manaslu Circuit treks are challenging, adventurous, and worth every second, but if you want to experience true raw Himalayan adventure, where barely a few trekkers travel to, then the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek will be the right choice.

Among all circuit treks in Nepal, the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek is the toughest one. The inaccessibility of the Kanchenjunga region has long kept the crowd of travelers away from this area.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit trekking route lacks basic infrastructure for the trekkers, but it upholds the authentic Himalayan essence. Therefore, we love the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek for its adventure, tranquil trails, and authenticity.

It is an offbeat trek, so trekkers have to be in good shape and possess previous trekking experience. The Kanchenjunga Circuit trail has many steep sections, landslide areas, and rocky trails.

Trekkers have to be very careful while trekking and must use trekking poles to maintain their balance. Overall, the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek 15 days is for those who love solitude, are up for a challenging adventure, and are comfortable facing unpredictable situations.

*You will cross three mountain passes on this trek - Sele Le (4,290 m/14,075 ft), Sinion La Pass (4,646 m/15,243 ft), and Mirgin La Pass (4,480 m/14,698 ft)

Essential Information

Kanchenjunga Circuit trek difficulty

The Kanchenjunga Circuit trek is a very challenging adventure in the Himalayas. This trek is purely for experienced trekkers who have already explored the famous trekking routes in Nepal and are now ready to traverse the remotest corners of the Himalayas.

On this trek, you will hike 6 to 7 hours a day through some of the most underdeveloped villages in the far east of Nepal. The terrain is steep and rugged. As much as the trek is physically demanding, it is also mentally challenging.

Bare minimum services demand adaptability, patience, and perseverance from trekkers. The trail goes through dense forests, rockfall areas, alpine meadows, and glacial moraines.

Kanchenjunga Circuit trek distance

The Kanchenjunga Circuit trek distance is around 220 to 250 kilometers.

Permit requirements for the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek

For the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek, you will need

  • Restricted Area Permit for Kanchengunja
  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit

Along with these two permits, trekkers also have to trek with a local Nepali trekking company like us, who are authorized to operate restricted area treks in Nepal. Additionally, there must be two trekkers in the group and a licensed guide.

High altitude guidelines that will help you avoid altitude sickness during the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek

The highest elevation on the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek is 5,140 meters (16,863 ft). It is Pangpema, the north base camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Apart from that, you will go above 4,500 meters multiple times throughout the trek.

As we assume, the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek is mostly done for experienced trekkers, so acclimatizing will not be a huge problem because of their previous high altitude experiences.

Still, following preventive measures to avoid altitude sickness is a must, and these are:

  • Keeping yourself hydrated
  • Ascending slowly
  • Maintaining a uniform pace
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking
  • Eating carbohydrate-rich food and getting ample rest daily
  • Listen to your body

Kanchenjunga Circuit trek best time

The views and Kanchenjunga Circuit trail condition are best in spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November).

Winter (December to February) sees harsh cold and deep snow in the Kanchenjunga region. The upper parts of the trail even become impassable.

Likewise, there is a high risk of landslides in summer/monsoon (June to mid-September). The trails are also muddy and slippery, which makes trekking very challenging.

*Note:

  • The climate is cold, especially at night and in the morning, in the spring and autumn seasons. So, pack warm clothes.
  • You will need a waterproof/windproof jacket and pants.
  • The climate drastically changes as you ascend higher.
  • Weather forecasts are unreliable as you go higher. So, trust the knowledge and instinct of your guide, as he is very experienced.

Accommodation during the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek

It is a teahouse trek. However, in some sections of the trail, such as between Ghunsa and Lhonak or Tortong and Tseram, camping is the only option.

So, it is important that you follow an itinerary that is well-designed to provide tea house accommodation throughout the trek, like ours (unless you do not want to camp).

Teahouses on the Kanchenjunga Circuit route are very basic, and the services also lack compared to Everest and Annapurna. Hot showers, WiFi, and charging are luxuries here.

We recommend trekkers to carry backups like a solar charger, wet tissues, etc, as well as extra snacks and supplies.

Food

We provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trek. Starting the day, you will have tea or coffee with bread, porridge, soups, pancakes, oats, paratha, eggs, Tibetan bread, boiled potatoes, etc.

For lunch and dinner, you will have heavy options such as dal bhat, momo, thukpa, stew, fried rice, pasta, spring rolls, curries, noodles, etc. All meals will be freshly cooked without any bad ingredients.

You have to be well stocked in snacks, bars, etc. Boiled drinking water is available at a reasonable cost. Carry water purification tablets just in case.

Transporation

The Kanchenjunga Circuit trek involves a domestic flight between Kathmandu and Taplejung & Bhadrapur and Kathmandu. Likewise, you will also drive from Taplejung to Sekathum (5-6 hours), Sherpa Gaun to Birtamod (9-10 hours), and Birtamod to Bhadrapur (0.5 hour).

Travel Insurance for the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek

Restricted area treks compulsory require travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation and medical bills. So, make sure to buy travel insurance with these two coverages for the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek.

You need to give us insurance documents before the trek starts. It must be good to go for a trek in Nepal, so double-check with the company.

Communication and charging on the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek

Kanchenjunga Circuit is an off-grid trek. Even if WiFi or a telephone is available in some places, the location, high altitude, and weather usually result in a bad network.

You will not get any signal in many places. You can carry a Nepali SIM during the trek, but there is no guarantee of network everywhere.
