Located at the southeast end of the Ganesh Himal, Paldor Peak is one of the less popular but extremely adventurous trekking peaks in Nepal. This peak stands 5,903 meters above sea level.

Although Paldor Peak's elevation is shorter than that of famous Island Peak, Lobuche Peak, and Mera Peak, this peak is technically more challenging than they are. Note that Paldor Peak is not extremely technically advanced but offers a good introduction to technical mountain climbing.

Climbers who want to hone their technical climbing knowledge will find Paldor Peak climbing very helpful. The best thing is that Paldor Peak climbing is also shorter than most other trekking peaks in Nepal.

You can climb the mountain and return to Kathmandu in just 9 days. Though our Paldor Peak climbing itinerary doesn't include arrival and departure days, it will still be a short climbing trip with these two days built into the itinerary.

You will start Paldor Peak climbing from Gatlang, which can be reached in around 8 to 9 hours of driving from Kathmandu. From Gatlang, you will trek to Somdong village and ascend to Paigutang Kharka.

From here, you will hike to Paldo Peak Base Camp, where you will spend two nights acclimatizing, and push to Paldor Peak High Camp. After resting for a few hours at the high camp, you will wait for the summit window and climb to the summit of Paldor Peak.

We provide full board tent service at base camp and high camp for a hassle-free climbing experience for our clients. Our support team will take care of setting up the tents, arranging essentials, and cooking food.

You will have full time to acclimatize, rest, and recover for the summit. The journey is incredible and definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you are looking for less crowded trekking trails and a hidden trekking peak gem, Paldor Peak will not disappoint you.

During the Paldor Peak climbing 9 days, you will explore the lush alpine flora and fauna, get to know the Tamang community lifestyle, and witness stunning mountain vistas.

Paldor Peak climbing via the southeast ridge route

Via the southeast ridge route, you will climb the long snow and ice arete that goes down to Fang Peak. From the Paldor Peak's east glacier high camp, you will climb the ridge's lowest point via steep snow and ice slopes.

It is also accessible via avalanche-prone couloirs from Paldor Peak's west glacier. The climb continues from here without any significant difficulty to the summit.

Paldor Peak climbing via the northeast ridge route

Via the northeast ridge route, you will first ascend through a moraine to a small lake located south of Fang Peak. Cross a stream and head towards the east ridge of Fang Peak. There are not many crevasses on the glacier.

From here, you will follow the Paldor Peak's east glacier and head north to a col of the northeast ridge. Cross a bergschrund and climb a high snow slope. It is quite challenging.

Alternatively, you can ascend the hill to the left, climbing diagonally towards a rocky pinnacle. Upon reaching the ridge, cross several loose rocks that lead to the snow arete.

Finally, you will cross a 150-meter headwall and climb on steep snow to the southeast ridge's junction that further connects to Paldor Peak summit.

Paldor Peak climbing difficulty

Paldor Peak has moderate technical difficulty. It has 45-50 degree snow slopes. Climbers need basic technical climbing skills to climb Paldor Peak. You will cross a glacier and navigate around a few crevasses, using climbing gear such as crampons, ropes, and ice axes.

Anyone planning to climb Paldor Peak must have previous trekking experience and some knowledge of peak climbing. Climbing experience is not an essential requirement for Paldro Peak, but interested individuals must be mountain smart.

Pre-climbing training

The Hiking in Himalaya team will provide necessary training before the summit push. We organized a pre-climbing training session at Paldor Peak Base Camp to teach you how to climb safely using ropes and other climbing gear.

Likewise, you will also learn some essential mountaineering techniques, route conditions, and our strategy. This pre-climbing training will boost your confidence and make you summit-ready.

Essential Information

How to deal with high altitude during Paldor Peak climbing and avoid altitude sickness?

Paldor Peak is situated at 5,903 meters above sea level. You will reach this elevation in 5 days of walking from Gatlang at 2,238 meters. Additionally, you will spend an acclimatization day at Paldor Base Camp.

Our Paldor Peak climbing itinerary is designed to provide you with ample time to acclimatize before pushing towards the summit.

One of the main requirements for the Paldor Peak climbing is previous high altitude experience. So, climbers do not have a hard time acclimatizing during climbing and have a high success rate.

If you follow our acclimatization plan and tips below, you can avoid altitude sickness:

  • Dehydration, exhaustion, and energy lack can lead to altitude sickness. So, we recommend climbers to drink plenty of water daily, not push themselves unnecessarily, and have ample carbohydrate-rich food to be in the best condition.
  • Get ample sleep daily. Do not drink alcohol or smoke while climbing. Climbing with a hangover increases safety concerns and altitude sickness risk.
  • Climb slowly. Take deep breaths. Maintain a steady pace.

Paldor Peak climbing permit

For Paldor Peak climbing, you will need the following permits from the Nepal government-

  • Paldor Peak climbing permit issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA)
  • Langtang National Park entry permit
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System)

Best season to climb Paldor Peak

The best season to climb Paldor Peak is spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). The weather conditions are good in these two seasons to safely climb a peak in the Himalayas.

There is less risk of avalanches, and many summit windows are also available. Trekking to the base camp is also less hectic in these seasons because the trail conditions are good and the landscapes are stunning.

Accommodation and food during the Paldor Peak climbing

While trekking, you will spend nights in a teahouse or the homes of the locals. The accommodation will be very simple and authentic. Consider it more like staying with locals and having home-cooked meals.

Small rooms, twin-shared beds, a common washroom, and squat toilets are mostly available. In some villages, you will have access to Western-style toilets as well.

At the Paldor Peak Base Camp and High Camp, you will stay in alpine tents. We provide sturdy tents for an alpine environment. Our support team will establish tents and prepare meals for us.

You will eat thukpa, dal bhat, fried rice, Tibetan bread, paratha, pasta, noodles, momo, bread, soups, porridge, tea, coffee, pancakes, oats, eggs, etc, during the trip.

Clean drinking water is also available. Travelers drink boiled water while traveling in the mountains of Nepal. It is a safe, convenient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly option.

Transporation

The Paldor Peak climbing starts and ends in Gatlang. It is located 139 km away from Kathmandu. We use a local bus to drive from Kathmandu to Gatlang.

*Climbers can upgrade to a private jeep by paying extra money.

Travel Insurance

Helicopter evacuation and medical bill coverage are a must if you want to do Paldor Peak climbing. Make sure to buy travel insurance with these two coverages and bring the document with you.

Double check with the insurance company and ensure the helicopter evacuation is okay for peak climbing in Nepal. Without proper travel insurance coverage, climbers will be denied from joining the expedition.

Communication and charging

In villages like Gatlang and Somdong, you will get paid WiFi, but the network will be weak due to the remote location. Mobile networks are also not reliable in this area, but you can carry it for backup.

Likewise, a charging facility is available in all villages, but it can cost you Nrs 100 to Nrs 300 per device. We recommend climbers to pack an extra battery, a power bank, and even a solar charger for backup.

During climbing, there will be a network. We stay connected with our climbing party via a satellite phone that our guide carries.
