Are you looking for a new/unheard trekking destination in Nepal? Then, the Ruby Valley trek is a perfect option for you. It is a newly introduced trekking route that explores the untouched corners of the Ganesh Himal region.

The Ruby Valley trek begins from Bhalche and takes you through lush hills and steamy terraces to Singla Pass. On the way, you will spend nights in Gongga and Rupchet villages.

After crossing Singla Pass, you will descend to Machet Kharka, where you will spend an acclimatization day and continue trekking to Sertung Village.

The trail is spread between the Langtang National Park and the Manaslu Conservation Area, so you can discover a wide variety of vegetation, flowers, medicinal plants, etc.

Leaving Sertung Village, you will descend to a place where natural hot springs are found. Spend the day relishing natural hot springs and trek from here to Khading Village.

Further, the trail ascends to Dunchet Kharka, from where you can see a stunning landscape and mountain vistas. You will now descend to Soti Khola, spending a night in Manbu Village.

The Ruby Valley trek 14 days ends in Soti Khola. You will take a scenic drive from here to Kathmandu. The evening will be free in Kathmandu, and the next day, our team will drop you off at the international airport.

*You might be wondering whether you can find rubies or other minerals/precious metals during the Ruby Valley trek. Unfortunately, you can't. Mines are closed at the moment, and foreigners are not allowed to enter them in any way. Even if you luckily find any precious stones, they could be subject to national interest, and you have to hand them over to the Nepalese government.

The Ruby Valley is a gem tucked away in the heart of the Ganesh Himal region. Unknown to the majority of trekkers, the trek to Ruby Valley offers unbelievable mountain scenery, rich cultural heritage, peaceful trails, and exotic flora and fauna.

The name of the valley came to be Ruby because the valley, in reality, has a rich deposit of precious red rubies. The trekking route is there, but not the trekking infrastructure.

So, unlike the famous Everest and Annapurna region, trekkers enjoy homestays during the Ruby Valley trek and experience an authentic mountain lifestyle.

The Ruby Valley trek route is dominated by towering 7000-meter mountains that include Ganesh Himal, Langtang range, and Dorje Lhakpa. Along with that, you will also see mountains like the Annapurna range, Manaslu, and the Tibetan mountains.

The landscapes along the trail are also phenomenal. The tranquility of the region, the hospitality of the locals, and the rich biodiversity make the Ruby Valley trek very special and a lifetime experience.

Cultural experiences during the Ruby Valley trek 14 days

Essential Information

Ruby Valley trek difficulty

The Ruby Valley trek is a moderate to difficult trekking adventure. This trek is for both beginner and experienced trekkers. You do not need previous trekking experience to do the Ruby Valley trek, but a decent fitness level is required.

The Ruby Valley trek route ascends and descends through forested hills. Some sections of the trail are steep and rocky, too. Crossing Singla Pass is quite challenging.

Likewise, the services on the Ruby Valley trek are also very minimal. Trekkers have to adjust a lot. If you are thinking you will get lodge accommodation on the Ruby Valley trek like other famous treks, please note that it is a homestay trek.

Altitude sickness during the Ruby Valley trek

The Ruby Valley trek is a high-altitude trek, but the elevation gain is not as high as the Everest Base Camp trek or the Langtang Valley trek. The highest point you will reach on the Ruby Valley trek is 4,130 meters (13,550 ft).

Comparatively, the elevation gain is not too high on the Ruby Valley trek; still, trekkers have to be aware of altitude sickness and follow the preventive measures below:

  • Ascend slowly and have a steady pace.
  • Do not rush and exhaust yourself unnecessarily. You have to be patient while trekking in the Himalayas.
  • Drink 2 to 3 liters of water daily and have soups, teas, etc.
  • You have to maintain your hydration to avoid altitude sickness. Therefore, avoid smoking or alcoholic drinks.
  • Eat carbohydrate-rich meals such as dal bhat at least once a day.
  • Get ample sleep daily.

Ruby Valley trek best time

The perfect time to do the Ruby Valley trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). Spring is the season of flowers. Therefore, the foothills are covered with rhododendrons. This makes the trail extremely gorgeous.

Likewise, in autumn, travelers may get to experience Nepalese festivals if they adjust their trekking schedule to coincide with festivals. Apart from that, both these seasons have fantastic weather and climate to enjoy trekking.

The chances of rainfall are less, so the trails are in good condition. The scenery and mountain views are also breathtaking. If you are fine with cold, you can also do the Ruby Valley trek in winter (December to February).

Summer/monsoon (June to August) is the worst time of the year to do the Ruby Valley trek because rainfall ruins the trail, and the views are also not that great. On the other hand, it is a great time to explore the rich biodiversity of the Ganesh Himal region.

So, pick the time that best aligns with your interests and holiday to do the Ruby Valley trek.

Accommodation during the Ruby Valley trek

The Ruby Valley trek is a homestay trek. The trekking route is not established at the moment. So, the trekkers spend nights in the homes of the locals. It is a great opportunity to see the lifestyle of the locals closely.

The rooms will be small and may have 2 or 3 beds. Private rooms are rare and cost extra money. You will get a clean bed and blankets. We recommend carrying a sleeping bag during the Ruby Valley trek.

In most places, squat toilets are available on the Ruby Valley trek route. Western-style toilets are found in only a handful of places. We will book you the best homestays with Western-style toilets during the trek.

Food

Our Ruby Valley trek package includes three meals a day- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You will eat food similar to what locals eat. The food menu is not that great on the Ruby Valley trek.

Fried rice, dal bhat, thukpa, noodles, momo, and Tibetan breads are some common dishes you will eat. Apart from that, boiled potatoes, pancakes, oats, porridge, stew, and soups will also be available.

Travelers should carry enough snacks for the journey. Boiled water is available throughout the trail, so you do not have to worry about drinking water. Carry water purification tablets for backup.

*Trekkers should inform their guide if they have any food allergies before the trek starts, and also stay attentive to what they eat.

*Pack toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer, etc, for the trek.

Transporation

We provide airport pick up and drop off on your arrival and departure days from Kathmandu. Airport transfers will be provided as per our Ruby Valley trek itinerary.

Additionally, we provide a local bus ride from Kathmandu to Bhalche to start the trek and from Soti Khola to Kathmandu at the end of the trek.

We use a private car for sightseeing and for the airport to hotel pick and drop off. We use public transportation or local buses during the trek.

Travel insurance for the Ruby Valley trek

When you trek in remote areas like Ruby Valley, which is only accessible via walking and has no good health facility, it is important that you are carrying travel insurance with helicopter evacuation and medical bills to back you up in case of an emergency.

Note that travel insurance with helicopter evacuation up to 4,000 meters is mandatory for the Ruby Valley trek. Kindly buy it in your country and bring the documents with you.

Communication and charging during the Ruby Valley trek

Charging is available in many villages, but costs extra money. Carry a solar charger and spare batteries for backup.
